The Best Coffee in Newcastle: An Honest Guide From a Cafe That's Biased

By Jack Bingham

Every cafe in Newcastle will tell you they pour the best coffee in town. We get it. We'd say it too (we're saying it right now, sort of).

So instead of just claiming the crown, here's something more useful: what actually separates great coffee from average coffee, and how to spot it anywhere in Newcastle.

Check who roasts the beans

The best cafes in Newcastle pour from local roasters, and they'll tell you who without you asking. We pour Glee Coffee, a small roastery 40 minutes up the road who took out first place at the 2025 Golden Bean, the biggest coffee roasting competition in the world. We were stoked for them (and maybe bragged a little on their behalf).

Ask when it was roasted

Coffee is fresh produce. Beans peak in the weeks after roasting, not months. If a cafe can't tell you when their beans were roasted, that tells you something too.

Taste the milk

Half your flat white is milk, so it matters more than people think. We use Little Big Dairy, a single source family farm. The difference is real.

Watch for the morning dial-in

Beans change day to day, so the best baristas adjust their recipe every single morning before the first customer walks in. Ours do. It's a small thing nobody sees, and it's the difference between a good coffee and a great one.

Then trust your own taste

At the end of the day the best coffee in Newcastle is the one you look forward to. If you're ever out our way, we'd love to be in the running. You'll find us at 71 Cowper St, Wallsend, from 6am Monday to Saturday.
