Years ago on our old blog we wrote up our favourite cafes in Melbourne, and then Tokyo. People loved them. Somehow we never did the one that matters most, so here it is. Our favourite cafes in Newcastle.
First, the obvious question: why would a cafe hype up other cafes? Because we've always said we're customer focussed, not competitor focussed. Newcastle having a brilliant coffee scene is good for everyone, especially you. These are the places we genuinely rate, in no particular order (we don't rank our mates).
Wildflower, Wallsend
Look, we're biased (woohoo, yes us!). But we'd honestly put our coffee up against anyone's. Delish coffee, excellent service, our own blend, dialled in fresh every morning, a specials board that gets a bit silly, and the best regulars in the country. You'll find us at 71 Cowper St, Wallsend, 6am Monday to Saturday.
The Pavement Society, Boolaroo
A cosy little spot on Main Road that's brought real life to its pocket of Boolaroo since 2022. Incredible reuben toasties, great coffee, and staff who are always amazing. The whole place just feels homely, right down to the handmade goodies they sell. It's run by people who love what they do.
Lords Coffee, Hamilton and beyond
Lords know exactly what they do. Good coffee, fast, no fuss. It's such a different take to ours and we respect it so much! They're a family owned crew who roast their own beans and have quietly grown from their Beaumont Street flagship to spots across Newcastle. When you want an excellent coffee in your hand quickly, this is the move.
New Nero Espresso Bar, Cardiff
A special one to us. New Nero opened around the same time we did, tucked away on Harrison Street in Cardiff, and the coffee is always world class. Rotating single origins, proper gear, early opens for the commuters. They're a true small business like us, and you can taste how much they LOVE coffee in every cup. If you're Cardiff way before 11am, go.
First Light, Lambton
Our new neighbours just down the road. First Light opened in 2026 inside a beautifully restored 1940s building in Lambton Park, with a deck looking over the playground. It's more of a dine in situation than a grab and go, and I've snuck in for a few brekkies on a day off (the menu is excellent, that's all we're saying). Great addition to the neighbourhood.
Go support them
That's the list. Newcastle's coffee scene is full of small businesses pouring their hearts into it, and every coffee you buy local keeps that going.
And if you visit one because of this post, tell them the Wildflower crew says hi.
