Ethical coffee gets thrown around a lot, and it can mean anything from genuine farmer partnerships to a nice looking sticker. Here's what it means when we say it.
It starts at the farm
Our roaster, Glee Coffee, knows the farmers behind their beans by name. Most of the mills they source from are independently owned by families or local co-operatives. The beans rotate seasonally because coffee is a crop, not a factory product. That relationship-first way of working is one of the main reasons we chose them back in 2018, and the reason we've never left.
The milk matters too
We run Little Big Dairy through a Milk Juggler, which swaps plastic bottles for 10 litre bladders. Less packaging, less waste, better milk. Nobody sees it happen behind the counter, but it saves thousands of plastic bottles a year.
The cup in your hand
Our takeaway cups are fully home compostable. Bring your own cup and we'll save you 50 cents, every time. About a quarter of our daily coffees go into reusables now, which genuinely makes us so happy, but we;re always looking to grow it!
Why we care this much
Our whole thing is that people are valuable. That has to include the people who grow the coffee, not just the people drinking it. Read more about how we run things on our ethics page, or come ask us in person at the cafe. We love this stuff.
