Here is a thing most people do not realise about clothing brands. The overwhelming majority run on blanks. They order plain pre-made garments from a wholesaler, print their artwork on the front, and sell it.
There is genuinely nothing wrong with it. It is fast, affordable, and it is how most brands get started, us included in the very early days. It just means the garment underneath is often the same one from brand to brand.
Making unique, truly locally designed pieces costs us more in both money and time. But to us it's important. If you buy a Wildflower piece, significant time and effort has gone into every measurement, fabric choice and stitch.
We design the garment, not just the graphic
These days every Wildflower piece starts as a tech pack, which is a detailed specification document. It lists every measurement at every size, the fabric weight, the stitch type, the neckline construction, the shoulder drop, the hem length, the wash, there's about 30 individual measurements to make something a tee shirt.
We design the graphic, with a story or message we want to share, then design the actual garment around it.
Then we sample, and sample again
The factory makes one piece to our spec and sends it over. We wear it, wash it, give it a hard time. We compare it to the last thing we made. If the shoulder is a centimetre out or the fabric feels wrong after a wash, we send notes and they make another.
Sometimes it is right first try. Sometimes it takes a few rounds. That is months before a single unit gets made, and it is the part nobody sees. (and it costs heaps more than you think)
We have stood in the factory
We have been to our manufacturer in Shenzhen, walked the floor, met the people making our clothes, and felt the fabric options in person. We check factory audits before we work with anyone.
People draw the line wherever they choose to, but this is important to us.
What that actually gets you
A fit that is ours rather than a wholesaler's default. Fabric chosen for quality, weight and feel instead of price per unit. Details like special decoration, contrast stitching and garment dyeing that you cannot do on a finished blank.
And honestly, longevity. A heavier cotton with a proper wash holds its shape through years of laundry instead of going thin and shapeless in a season.
Why it matters to us
We would rather make fewer things properly than lots of things quickly. It is slower and more expensive and it means we cannot chase every trend, and we are completely at peace with that.
You can see it most clearly in the Limited pieces, where we push furthest on fabric and technique. Every one is designed from scratch here in Newcastle, Australia, then made to our exact spec.
